Windy Poplars takes on a charm of its own, when Anne Shirley boards with two widows Aunt Kate, and Aunt Chatty, with Rebecca Dew as the caretaker-cum-cook, during her three-year term as principal in the village school. She captures her experiences with the residents of Summerside through letters to Gilbert at Redmond Medical College, Kingsport  

The Pringles make Anne's life as a principal difficult. as she encounters problems and hostility both at school and in the neighbourhood. As is typical of Anne, she gets involved in the residents' lives, changes it for the better and fixes alliances, which otherwise would be dangling in mid-air- Little Elizabeth, Katherine, Terry, and Dovie
